Windows 7 – Pros and Cons

16 May 2009 1 views One Comment

I posted a short write up on Windows 7 here and am writing again to provide an update of the features that I found to be useful. This will be more of a pros and cons of this operating system rather than a full review.

I have used this now for two weeks and here is the write up. Hope it will help in your decision to try out this OS.

Pros

Lets start things on a positive note shall we..

Start and Shutdown Speed

Starting and shutdown speed has improved. I have installed many applications and have a few apps that start up automatically when I log on. I did not notice any lagging when this happened.

I normally don’t shut down my PC. Instead I will let it go to sleep after an hour of inactivity. This way I strike a balance between speed of starting up and power usage.

XP issue: In Windows XP, the sleep/hibernate feature just did not work. No idea at all. Had updated the drivers and so on and still no go.

Taskbar & Aero peek

I have mentioned this before and will mention again. This might be a copy from Mac but is one of the useful features around. I like this feature which nice docks multiple open application on to itself. Moving the mouse over the icon will give you a preview (Aero Peek) over the open windows. Nice.

Libraries

I like this. Instead of looking for Documents/Pictures/Music all over your hard drive, all you have to do is add to the library and you can view it in one place. By adding you are just kinda of placing a link or shortcut.

I normally keep my photos and mp3 in another partition. Each time I launch lets say a media player I will need to dig up the drive and folder to play it(assuming you have not added to the playlist). The ‘Music’ library just makes life easy

Just right-click on the folder you want added to the library.

addlibraries

These are the major features that I noticed. Everything else is similar to Vista just much improved.

Cons

Explorer

Explorer.exe seems to crash often. Let say I launch the library or anything to do with explorer it just hangs without any response. Either it crashes out and recovers or I have to manually end it and it swiftly recovers.

There is a registry fix for it but does not seem to work. I am trying to see if it a problem with any apps that is installed or a genuine problem with Windows 7.

Since this is an RC, hopefully it is fixed it the final release.

Conclusion

THis is definitely not my final conclusion. Since I am not at my PC the entire day, I am unable to rigorously test Windows 7. More work has to be done to test this baby and will be updating you soon.

Other than the annoyin random explorer crashes, I am satisfied with the OS. What will it cost when it is out. That will be one of the deciding factor for me to stay on Windows 7.

yea IMO since they screwed so many people over with vista I think there should be either and upgrade price for them or some way of compensating the millions of people who, even after some time, gave windows vista a chance and are still unhappy with it. I mean most people ended up paying close to 300 bucks for that unfinished piece of garbage. I think people will be happy with Windows 7 and I think this OS will be the one that finally replaces Windows xp.
