Iphone 3GS or HTC Hero
Alright, its time to upgrade my mobile. It has been over a year and I am surprised my inner geekness has not told me to upgrade or get a new gadget.
Ok ok, I have few gadgets(lens and tripod) for my my photography hobby but nothing else.
Currently I have a HTC Touch Diamond mobile device and I am bored with it. In fact I am annoyed with it. Its time to upgrade to any other OS based device than Windows Mobile. Actually it is OS that I hate.
After thinking through, I have narrowed down to two devices:
- iphone 3GS
- HTC Hero (Android)
Which One and Why
HTC Hero – though it is not released in Singapore yet, I think it is a great phone for me to have. Being open source, there are so many things that can be done with the Android OS. This Android based device is becoming popular and soon you will see many apps available for it. Being a Google fan, I love the integration it brings to Google’s services.
With the Touch Sense UI atop of the Android OS, it just makes the device desirable.
List of reason:
- Configurability
- Great UI HTC Sense
- Adobe Flash 10 built in
- Google services integrated
- Excellent trackball navigation
- Love open source
- A Google and HTC fan
- None many in my friend/family circle has an Android phone
Ok, Every donkey on the street is using an iphone now. The novelty of having such a phone has been worn out. I totally agree that iphone design is just beyond imagination. They have great ideas and designs. But, it is just expensive and restrictive.
Come on! Exclusivity to just one carrier? Look at the price that SingTel in Singapore is selling them at? It is much higher that normal price plans available. Obviously Apple is getting a cut from subscription prices as well.
Conclude
I could have chosen any other Android device. Namely HTC Dream, HTC Magic or the Samsung I7500. I am choosing HTC Hero for its design and also the 3.5mm headphone jack that it comes with.
Iphone fans what do you think?
Update (21/09/09):
As of today, all telcos are carrying the HTC Hero at a competetive price.

well if you want another point against the iphone you could probably mention about multi touch for the HTC Hero? from the site presentation from the HTC UK site, the Hero seems to allow pinch zooming. Would hope that it really allows the development of some apps that have multi touch capabilities =)
Personally, i’m waiting for the Hero to be released in Singapore =)
Thanks for the comment.
Yes, multi-touch is another added function but iphone was first one to have that so i just avoided mentioning that.
Anyway is multi-touch that useful? My friends(iphone) are not really using that function. Maybe they are too used to single touch.
hey vijay! glad to know you like the hero. the hero will reach our shores soon enough; good things come to those who wait!
Hi Gina,
Thanks. Pls keep me updated. Wld like to have hands on one.
[...] based HTC Hero, here I [...]
i’m also looking forward to getting the HTC Hero =)
well regarding multi touch, i do feel its gimmicky. i think its only useful for web surfing and at the most gaming. when using a phone on a normal basis i don’t really see the need for multi touch
well UK should be getting theirs end of this month and since UK’s frequencies are rather similar to that of singapore i guess we could see it soon?
my only fear is that telcos start to play abt with exclusivity like what they did with the iphone =(
Same feelings here. Most iphone users are still tapping at the screen. Have not seen them using multi touch.
As for the HTC Hero. Gina will update me when it is in our shores. Pls do visit my blog for updates.
I doubt it will be exclusive to any particular telco. I doubt Google and HTC will want that. Besides HTC magic is available from all telcos so Hero too will be avail to all telcos.
You might want to subscribe to my newsletter too. Thanks for your comments
well i’ve been checking out your blog more often since this article =) need more local teleco news =)
i guess Gina has contacts to distributors etc? heh
Well i have this fear of it honestly. like how Singtel tried to pull a fast one on the Dream, as much as i really wanted to get it, stupid Singtel didn’t let me buy the phone itself cause i was on a contract still.
Well i’m just afraid that starhub might secure it since of its hype (more hype than the Dream at least) and also for the fact that among the 3 telecos starhub’s the only one to bother to organise android development competitions if my memory serves me right.
Well, lets wait and see.
I have an iPhone now and just love it but that HTC Hero looks pretty darn cool. It’s hard to compete with the iPhone though. I thought that a good competitor was the Blackberry Storm until I actually got an iPhone. Nothing compares.
Hi Michelle,
Tried the iphone 3g before. Pretty cool. With the upgrade to OS 3.0 it is much better.
But it has lost the appeal for me. Expensive(atleast in singapore) and tied to particular telco is definitely a no no for me.
HTC Hero has something about it. The UI is cool. Definitely no way near iphone.
I am going for the macbookpro so I will have to forgo HTC Hero. The HTC Touch Diamond with the so-so Windows Mobile will be sticking with me for a while now.
I am tempted by Hero. Hope the price is affordable when it is launched in sg…
Hi Leion,
Hope so too. With so much hype around I am afraid it might hit the 1k mark. But with telco contracts, hopefully below the $700 mark.
any idea when the hero will be hitting spore? have been waiting for it? heard frm other sites that it will hit ard august
I hear that it will be around in August too.
I will update once I have any kind of info
Just to update you, HTC Hero expected 14th August. http://www.tictechto.com/2009/07/29/coming-your-way-soon-htc-hero/
Oh thanks. cant wait for it, 14th aug seems far away
I’ll definitely go for the HTC Hero. Am using the HTC Snap now and it’s a great device.
Yong Hwee,
Thanks for commenting. Yes, HTC makes great phones.
I actually am very interested in the Hero. Problem is my budget is gone after spending on a macbookpro. If the price is offered low at Singtel for recontract and if I can sell off my HTC Touch Diamond for good amount, I should be able to get it.
Come on HTC keep the price low!
hi vijay, i saw another site online so i was just wondering which one of the dates is the official one ?
http://techielobang.com/blog/2009/08/05/finally-confirmation-of-htc-hero-event-date-for-singapore/
The date on techielobang is correct. HTC Hero has been delayed till 4th September I have actually updated with another post at http://www.tictechto.com/2009/08/05/htc-hero-delayed-in-sg/
Hi there,
i am wondering if Hero is able to syn the datas from Outlook? all my contacts and calendar r in it which is my no1 piority for a Hp.
thank you in advance for anyone who can answer my questions
regards
Suen
Hi Suen,
I believe there is no straight forward method. You will need some apps installed both on your pc and android phone to do it.
http://www.jakeludington.com/android/20081105_how_to_sync_outlook_with_t-mobile_g1_android_phone_automatically.html
The way I suggest is to use Google Calendar Sync in your pc. This will upload your calendar and contacts to Googles gmail and Google Calendar.
Then on the Hero, use the in built Google app to login to your Google account and sync with it.
I am not sure of direct syncing like you do on Windows Mobile using ActivSync.
Will post here once I find any information on it.
hey man thanks alot. altho more work neede but i wun mind to haf this rather den 3GS as it seems like a everyday phone now
Hi Suen,
yup. no way i gonna pay higher monthly subscription for the iphone. The Hero can basically do whatever and better than iphone.
haha well it depends on wheather a person deems the data charge as an xtra bcos for me i think its ok and im getting e cheapest rate. By e way, do u happen to if theres accerolometer for Hero and when will the telco carry them?
thanks…
Yes Hero has that. Can detect if u are holding it vertical or horizontal.
During the launch I saw an interesting app. being showcased by the developers. You shake the phone violently when u are in danger and the phone will auto call ur relative or police. Still in the works though.
Heard Starhub will carry it in 19Sept. No idea of the other 2 telcos.
thanks for sharing ^^.
I happen to stumble across this blog and it stats some major defect about Hero. I am wondering if the cause of delay could be due the reason as stated in the blog. Nevertheless i hope it wont happen as it would dampen the image of Hero.
just to share http://foxteka.blogspot.com/
Thanks for sharing the link.
Hopefully such defect has been fixed prior to being released here.
wonder if the other carriers will be carrying this,
someone said starhub’s goin to be launching this.
EVERYONE’S carrying a iphone nowadays… cant stand the thought of carrying one while the other guys sitting both on my left and right are using the same thing…. ^.-
wonder wad will the price be with contract?
the way singtel is dealing with the iphone is ridiculous…. its too ex
WAITS for now
Yes Starhub is launching but I did not hear about other telcos. Pretty quite actually.
I think Singtel will launch the Hero in conjuction with the F1 race launch thingy
Hi vijay,
have you bought?
Hi Suen,
No I did not. I decided to get something with real keyboard. I bought the Nokia E71.
