Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.0 TB – review
In the digital era, digital storage is a major concern of many. As for me, I love to take photos and videos and these are precious ones. As the data gets larger every year, you need some where to store them. What better than the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1.0 TB External Hard disk.
The Package
The FreeAgent Desk comes with all you need to quickly set it up:
- - Power Adaptor
- - USB Cable
- - Quick start guide
- - Stand
- - Software (already in the drive)
Setting Up
Setting is straight forward. Connect the USB and power cables. Power up the device. It will be recognised by Windows as a FreeAgent Hard drive.
Installing software
Double clicking on the drive should launch the Installer. If it does not, dont worry, you will see the setup.exe. Double click to launch the Seagate Manager installer and proceed to install.
Select your language of choice and proceed to next screen.
Click on Seagate Manager to install the application
Upon Installation an Icon will appear on the task bar. Click it to launch the Seagate Manager if it has not appeared after installation
Seagate Manager
The seagate manager is straight forward to work with.
You can backup your “My documents” folder or any other folders. Select the Simple Backup to backup whatever is in My Documents to the drive. Select “Custom Backup” to select the folders you want.
Use the Sync option to sync folders/files between two PCs.
You can encrypt your files for safe storage. Might be useful if you travelling around with your disk or don’t want any prying eyes to view your files.
Performance
What is a reviewing without pushing the drive to see its performance? Just for comparison sake, I will compare the performance against my 1 year old FreeAgent GO 120GB drive and the Seagate 200GB internal SATA drive.
HD Tune 2.55 will be used to run the test.
Seagate 200GB SATA internal drive – Transfer rates down over time.
Minimum at 30MB/s and Maximum 60MB/s transfer rates
Seagate FreeAgent Go – 120GB 2.5-inch drive
Definitely slower as it is a laptop drive. It gives some constant speed averaging at 29MB/s transfer rate.
Seagate FreeAgent Desk 1TB
Averaging transfer speed at 30MB/s. Almost equivalent to FreeAgent Go
Performance is pretty satisfactory considering this is a USB 2.0 based drive. I have done some 30GB of backup and seems much faster than any other USB drive I have used.
The above test is in no way a complete review. It is just a comparison between the drives I have to give an idea of transfer speeds.
Conclusion
If you want faster transfer speed, go for the Firewire based external drive like the FreeAgent Extreme. I dont have a firewire port on my PC and hence not worth the investment.
At SGD179, I would highly recommend this drive.

Price is acceptable as u said. If there is no external power supply, I think the price might be higher than this.
[...] Western Digital ships the first 1TB laptop hard drive 28 July 2009 1 views No Comment I was looking for a huge storage drive to put my back up in the other day at Challenger. I wondered if there was any portable external hard drive that is bigger than 500GB. I meant the 2.5” drive. Nope, not available. I decided to go for the Seagate FreeAgent Desk. [...]
Yup, price is affordable. I was actually looking for the 2.5inch based 1TB external drive. Just realized that it was only released recently. http://www.tictechto.com/2009/07/28/western-digital-ships-the-first-1tb-laptop-hard-drive/
